Sawrule

About the project

Tools that show their work.

Sawrule makes small calculators for people who measure, cut, price and estimate wood. The goal is simple: give you a useful number, explain where it came from, and make the limits visible.

Why these calculators?

Woodworking calculations often get buried in spreadsheets or presented as a single confident result. Sawrule keeps the formula, units, rounding and assumptions close to the result so you can check it before relying on it.

What “private” means here

The calculators run in your browser. The dimensions you enter are not sent to a calculation server and no account is required.

What can you calculate here today?

Sawrule started with board feet for finished lumber and round logs (Doyle, Scribner and International ¼-inch rules). It now covers firewood in depth: the legal cord and what a delivery must contain, face cords and ricks, the weight of a cord by species, the heat in a cord and how much wood a house needs for a winter, plus two shop helpers for shelf spacing and plywood panel yield.

How are new calculators chosen?

One at a time, when there is a real question people ask and a published dataset or regulation to answer it with. Every page lists its sources and states what it assumes, so you can check a figure before relying on it.
